Acid Reflux And Baking Soda

One of the most popular home remedies for acid reflux is baking soda. I'll be talking in more detail about this home remedy and the benefits of its use, but before I begin doing so, I strongly suggest you read the "Acid Reflux And Baking Soda- the side effects" section before
you consider using baking soda for acid reflux cure. Okay, so now let us get into the details!

Baking Soda - Brief history

Since the time of ancient Egyptians, baking soda has been used by people, it is also known as sodium bicarbonate.

Acid Reflux and Baking Soda - The Side Effects

So the good part is, it's a fact that baking soda can bring a stop to acid reflux but there's also a negative side to it's use as past researches indicated that serious side effects can generate especially if you use it on a regular basis.

Baking soda (or sodium bicarbonate) has a strong influence on both the stomach's acidity and PH of the rest of the human body. When sodium bicarbonate is ingested, it applies an alkaline effect on the rest of the body.

This can have a good and bad side to it. To those who may be at risk of some kinds of kidney failure (renal), this alkaline effect may have a strong and positive influence. However, the chronic use of sodium carbonate can result in an increased risk of kidney stones, lead to edema (fluid retention) and also to hypertension (high blood pressure).

In a nutshell, baking soda may interfere in a healthy person's ability of sustaining electrolyte balance in the blood which can end up in defective regulation of blood pressure and the keeping of body fluids. This could then result in lots of negative side effects, such as heart related problems due to build up of calcium.

Acid Reflux and Baking Soda - The Use Of Baking Soda For Acid Reflux

For acid reflux treatment, a baking soda solution mixed with water is usually used. The first step is to mix half a teaspoon of baking soda with half a glass of plain water (Three to four ounces). You should allow the baking soda to get completely dissolved before drinking it. Despite the fact that single doses of this solution are not found to cause any side effects, I strongly suggest you don’t take it more than twice a day (within a 24 hour) and if acid reflux symptoms are still present after few days, you should consult your doctor in case you still feel severe pain. This applies more to people who get acid reflux frequently. People on prescription medications or those with high blood pressure should avoid this remedy.

You've now got a good understanding about the use of baking soda for acid reflux. Although it's a home remedy that's known for it's effectiveness in eliminating acid reflux, it's effect might not be the same on everybody. There are those who find it highly effective and others who don’t, most importantly it should be taken in accordance to the method mentioned above as taking large amounts is highly likely to generate side effects. Just like in most home remedy cases, the safest bet would be to consult your doctor on the topic of acid reflux and baking soda. For other safe alternatives using natural home remedies that will help you get relief from acid reflux I highly recommend you have a look at the well known Reflux Remedy Report by Barton Publishing.
